چکیده

Introduction: Until the mechanics of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and contributing factors are better elucidated, effective preventive strategies will continue to elude us. Current dogma is that ACL injury results from a single loading cycle, but recent evidence supports tissue fatigue as a possible failure mechanism [1]. In a cadaveric pivot landing model, ACL rupture was found to occur during cyclic loading, hence suggesting cumulative trauma leading to ACL tissue fatigue. Similar failures due to tissue fatigue have been reported in rabbit medial collateral ligament [2]. Limited hip motion in internal rotation, as exhibited by individuals with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) [3], has been shown to be a contributing factor to ACL injury risk [4]. Could FAI increase ACL loading and thereby reduce ACL fatigue life under repeated loading this also reduce the ACL’s fatigue life. We tested the primary hypothesis that the number of loading cycles required to injury the ACL would be significantly greater in an in vitro model with adequate femoral internal rotation than in a model with limited rotation. Given that women are at a greater risk of sustaining an ACL injury [5], we also tested the secondary hypothesis that the female knee specimens would require a fewer number of cycles to ACL fatigue failure than the male specimens.

On the Fatigue Life of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament during Simulated Pivot Landings

Passive collagenous structures such as rabbit medial collateral ligament exhibit fatigue behavior under cyclic loading: the larger the magnitude of repetitive loading, the fewer the number of loading cycles until failure [1]. A knowledge gap exists as to whether the human ACL might also exhibit fatigue behavior under cyclic loading. If so, this would help explain why an ACL rupture can occur du...

The Effect of Lateral Loading Parameters on Monopile Behavior Based on Physical Modeling

Monopiles are the most common type of foundation for offshore wind turbines (OWT). Monopiles have been used in more than 80% of the offshore wind turbines. A monopile will be affected by millions of lateral load cycles during the operating period, which will cause its rotation and lateral deformation. The rotation and the deformation are dependent on the soil properties, monopile specification,...

Effect of Abutment Connection Type and Cyclic Loading on Removal Torque Value

Background and Aim: Maintaining the primary torque of the abutment screw is a common problem related to implant-supported restorations; a failure in this respect often leads to screw loosening. The abutment screw plays a critical role in the long-term stability of restorations. This study aimed to assess the effect of two abutment connection types with and without cyclic loading on removal torq...

Femoral Condyle Fracture during Revision of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: Case Report and a Review of Literature

Background: A rare and devastating complication following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) revision reconstruction is femoral fracture.    Case presentation: A 35-year old male soccer player with a history of ACL tear from the previous year ago, who underwent arthroscopic ACL reconstruction and functioned well until another similar injury caused ACL re-rupture. Revision of ACL reconstruction w...

Biomechanical comparison of anatomic single- and double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND Arthroscopic identification of the anteromedial (AM) and posterolateral (PL) bundle locations of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) has facilitated an improved quantitative description of ACL anatomy. Few studies have directly compared the biomechanical laxity of anatomic single-bundle (SB) versus anatomic double-bundle (DB) ACL reconstruction techniques based on precise anatomic d...
